DAWN OF THE DEAD (2004) SCENE ANALYSIS

In Dawn of The Dead (2004) in the opening credits explicitly relates to the historical context. There are lots of references to terrorism and the Islamic religion. Also this film was made just 3 years after the 9/11 attack tying into the US context and tapping into the cultural dominant ideology over the paranoia about Muslims and associating them with terrorism. The opening credits feature fast montages to create panic in the audience from the very beginning and uses parallel music through Johnny Cash's song – ‘ The Man Comes Around’ - a song about the biblical “Judgement Day” relating to Old Testament Christianity a particular line from the song ‘ There is no room in hell’ gives us a religious war subtext. This reflects Janet Staiger’s belief that to fully understand a film you need to understand its audience and the context of when it was released.
