In this scene Stephen/ Flyboy is shown as weak as he isn’t
very good with a gun (which is a phallic symbol). Roger has to step in and help also proving he
has a better aim. This challenges the cultural dominant ideology at the
time as David Emge who plays Stephen was a big and good looking star who
everyone expected to be the male hero, however the smaller Roger
proves to be much more skilled and powerful. This is because George A. Romero
as an auteur ( which is a theory written by Andrew Sarris in ‘Notes on the
auteur theory – 1962) liked to go against character stereotypes.
Romero has done this is some of his other films for example in his film
‘Martin’ (1976) the main character was a sympathetic vampire. Stephen's
weakness is evident again later in the mall when says ‘it’s ours, we took it’
when the bikers try to invade it, however this greed led to his death.
