DAWN OF THE DEAD (1979) SCENE ANALYSIS

In this final scene we are left with our survivors Fran and Peter. This shows George A. Romero again challenging character stereotypes in horror as Fran is a blonde, sexual active woman who survivors usually horror this kind of character is first to be killed. She also learns to shoot and fly the helicopter and could be considered as an early feminist as she is not just an object of the male gaze (linking to Laura Mulvey’s Male Gaze Theory). Then we also have Peter who is a black male hero this also links to the context as racism was still an issue in 1970’s society. The fact that these two characters leave together at the end gives the spectator a slight hint of an interracial relationship again challenging the cultural dominant ideology at the time. However the film has an unhappy ending as Roger and Stephen are dead, also the film has an open ending as we are left with two survivors but they don’t have much fuel.
