DAWN OF THE DEAD (1979) SCENE ANALYSIS

This scene is where we see an aerial shot of the zombies inside the mall, linking to context of the 1970’s as there was the rise in shopping malls therefore leading to an explosion of consumerism. Linking the context is one of the key themes that director George A. Romeo like his films to reflect on what is going on in society at the time. When the protagonists are questioning why so many zombies came to the mall Peter says that it’s a ‘memory of what they used to do’ and that it ‘was and important place in their lives’.  Another Romero film where he links his film to the historical context is ‘Night of the Living Dead’ (1968) where one of the protagonists Ben (a black male) was shot dead by the rednecks at the end of the film as he was ‘mistaken’ for a zombie, this links to the context at the time because there were lots of problems in the south of America with racism, for example the famous Rosa Parks story etc.  The mall is also a creepy/enclosed location and Fran describes it as a ‘prison’ this adds to the scariness of the film. There is also a lot of contrapuntal music that goes against the mood of the scene for example the cheesy ‘musak’ in the mall is used to unsettle us.
